What Life Coaching Is Not: What Coaches Do Not Do

It’s important to clarify what life coaching is not. Coaches do not give you the answers or do the work for you. While coaches bring a wealth of tools, resources, and strategies to help you succeed, the real power lies in your actions. Coaches guide and support, but you are the one who must implement the strategies and action plans that are designed specifically for you.

Life coaching is a partnership, and the results depend on your willingness to show up and take action. Coaches don’t hand you solutions they think are best for you; they help you discover what works best for you, tap into your potential, and push you toward growth. You’ll need to be committed, ready to reflect, and open to stepping outside of your comfort zone.

One way to demonstrate that you’re truly ready for change is by showing up to your sessions prepared. Bring a journal and pen, and be ready to dive in and start taking meaningful action immediately. This shows the coach you’re serious and willing to put in the work. Your coach will guide you, but the journey and the action are yours to take. The more you’re willing to invest in yourself, the more you’ll see the impact of life coaching.

If you’re considering life coaching—how exciting! This could be the start of an incredible journey. But before diving in, take a moment to reflect on the following:

  • Are you ready to achieve your goals, even if you’re not quite sure what they are yet? (That’s one of the amazing things about coaching—it helps you set goals that align deeply with who you are.)
  • Even if you feel scared or uncertain, are you open to taking action and exploring what’s possible for you?
  • Are you ready to show up for yourself, invest in your growth, and take ownership of your journey?
  • Do you feel willing to look at what’s holding you back and work through it with support?
  • Are you prepared to be honest, open, and committed to the process, even when it feels a little uncomfortable?

Life coaching is a partnership, and the magic happens when you’re ready to step into the process wholeheartedly. You don’t need to have it all figured out before your life coaching sessions—you just need the willingness to take that first step. A coach will guide you the rest of the way.

Is Coaching Similar to Therapy? Life Coaching vs Therapy: 

It’s easy to confuse life coaching and counselling. But the two are quite different.

Counselling often focuses on the past, helping you heal from wounds, unhelpful patterns, or behaviors that may be holding you back. It’s about diving deep into “why” you feel or act the way you do and working through it.

Therapy is great for helping you process emotions, reflect on how you got to where you are, and heal. It’s often the best choice if you’re feeling stuck in a loop—whether it’s low self-worth, unresolved pain, or a pattern you can’t break. Therapy tends to explore deep-rooted beliefs and experiences to help you understand and heal from them.

Coaching, on the other hand, is more future-focused.

It’s about identifying what’s holding you back—like limiting beliefs or doubts—and helping you move through them so you can reach your goals. Personal development life coaching doesn’t dive too deeply into the “why” behind those beliefs but instead focuses on “what now?” and “how can we shift this?” For example, if you believe you’re not worthy of success, a coach will help you reframe that belief and take aligned action to build confidence.

There’s overlap sometimes, but the focus is different.

A coach can absolutely help you with limiting beliefs and self worth (one of the most popular life coaching topics) but the goal is to create forward momentum rather than unpack the deeper roots of those beliefs. If you feel like you’re so stuck that you can’t take any steps forward—or if certain emotions or situations keep pulling you back—that’s when therapy can be more supportive.

Sometimes coaching and counselling go hand in hand, but they’re usually done at different stages. For example, if you’re working through deep-rooted issues that need unpacking, therapy can provide the support you need to heal. Once you’re ready to take action, coaching can help you move forward toward your goals.

It can be tricky to do both at the same time.

In my experience, when clients are in counselling while trying to work with me, unresolved issues often keep popping up and stopping them from fully engaging in the coaching process. It’s not that they don’t want to take action—it’s just that certain topics need dedicated space and time to heal. Once they’ve processed those things, they’re much better equipped to dive into coaching and start making tangible progress.

What Are Coaching Services Like?

Life coaching services come in many different formats, and there’s a wide variety to choose from – just like types of life coaching! Many offer life coaching packages with 1:1 sessions, typically in a container that spans anywhere from 1 month to 12 months. Others specialize in group coaching, workshops, and masterminds—there truly is something for everyone!

As for me, I offer 1:1 coaching sessions in a series, as I believe this is the most effective way to work on your goals over time and create lasting transformation.

In addition to individual female life coaching, I also host women’s circles, online workshops, and life coaching retreats in a group setting. The focus of these group experiences varies depending on the topic or need, but the overarching theme is always connection—helping you tap into your authentic self, uncover your core values, and show up to live your best life 🙂 – I love blending spiritual life coaching and personal growth together! 

How Much Does Life Coaching Cost? 

This depends too on the experience of the coach! You will normally find cheaper prices in group coaching vs 1:1 however there are some smaller 1:1 coaching packages out there in terms of 1-3 sessions.

I created a super affordable coaching package called my power hour package where we work together for 2 sessions over 2 weeks with unlimited voxer support for a super low entry point of $300 NZD. 

(Best life coaching tips – if you are in the US or Canada look for coaches who offer their services in a dollar that is cheaper! I still offer my coaching in NZD which works really well for my US clients!! (Almost half price ;))
